Horticulture Specialist

Position Summary: The Horticulture Specialist is responsible for directing greenhouse activities and providing remedies for maintaining, diagnosing and improving non-woody plant health throughout the Sanctuary. The Specialist will direct transplanting, pruning, application of fertilizers, occasional reconfiguration of garden beds and design of new landscaped areas. The Specialist will manage the needs of indoor non-woody plants and coordinate care with the landscape team and volunteers.
Nursery/ Greenhouse Responsibilities (est. 60%)
Responsible for directing and maintaining the greenhouse operations
Responsible for monitoring and responding to non-woody plant health concerns; identifying stressed plants and determining remedial course of action
Accountable for designing and refreshing the use of non-woody plant materials in both indoor and outdoor areas
Work with the Team Lead to help schedule and coordinate seasonal tasks such as transplanting, pruning, moving containers and the of application of fertilizers
The Specialist will help co-manage the indoor and outdoor hand watering schedules
Collaborate with the Landscape Manager and Team Lead in sourcing plant materials, greenhouse supplies, containers and decorative enhancements from local and regional specialized vendors
Forecast and select plant materials needed to replace dead plants, refresh containers and gardens for upcoming events
Teach new team members best practices for plant care, transplanting, pruning, stressed plant identification and fertilizer application
Provide design and logistic support for special events hosted by Development colleagues at the Sanctuary
Collaborate with the Irrigation Specialist to ensure all irrigation systems are providing the adequate amount of water for each plant/ area
Design and install seasonal decoration using plant materials
General Landscape Responsibilities (est. 40%)
Responsible for completing assigned customer work orders in a timely and professional manner
Participate in leadership and staff meetings to organize, prioritize and inform
Responsible for working with the Team Lead to ensure best-practice plant care methods are employed across the Sanctuary
Assist the Landscape Manager with the planning, installation and maintenance of newly landscaped areas
Maintain and service garden equipment and tools
Assist in our composting program utilizing both plant and animal waste
Perform weed removal and routine clean-up of landscaped areas using both power and hand tools
Perform snow removal tasks during winter months
Ensures a safe, healthy and positive work environment
Other duties as assigned
Skills and Experience:
Must be personally committed to the Mission and Core Values of the Best Friends Animal Society. (http://bestfriends.org/about-best- friends/our-mission)
Associates or bachelors degree in horticulture, botany or natural sciences is strongly desired
Minimum 3 years' experience in landscaping and/ or greenhouse operations
In-depth knowledge of plant identification, care and propagation with an emphasis on knowledge of plants in the aired western climate with high pH soils.
Master Gardener Certification or the willingness to obtain within 1 year
A positive attitude and ability to adapt to challenging situations
Excellent written and verbal communication skills at all levels and ability to communicate effectively in a group setting
General basic computer skills required; email, calendar & internet applications
Sensitivity to environmental stewardship and industry best practices
Self-directed individual with the ability to take charge and outline a path forward on projects with, at times, minimal supervision
Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated strong time management skills
Ability to follow oral and written instructions; read and interpret equipment operation manuals, site plans, and maintain equipment service records
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to routinely lift and carry 80 pounds.
Must be able to work outdoors for prolonged periods in all weather conditions with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees.
Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity daily, including, but not limited to: climbing up and down ladders, lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning and bending.
Must have a valid driver's license with a 3-year clean driving record

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
