Dog Caregiver Team Leader


  • With approval of Dogtown Managers, perform the following functions for team members:
    • Monitor and document performance
    • Participate in Annual Performance Review sessions
    • Provide guidance and coaching to members of their teams on all aspects of their current caregiver tier
    • Disciplinary action up to verbal counseling
  • Cultivate mentoring relationships with team members, viewed as point person for department
  • Liaison between caregivers and managers, adoptions, clinic, trainers, volunteer coordinators, etc
  • Substitute for absent caregivers and perform tasks to include, but not limited to: preparing food (special diets closely followed), feeding, watering and administering medication at an advanced level. Socializing with animals, training, walking, light grooming, watching behavioral issues, feeding patterns, and creating a positive living environment. Maintain records
  • Oversee training for new staff on all aspects of animal care and provide feedback on performance
  • Provide guidance and oversee the cleaning of work areas and preserve physical appearance of dog buildings and grounds to include, but not limited to: scooping dog waste, raking, sweeping, dusting, mopping, trash removal, scrubbing, weeding, etc
  • Mentor and provide ongoing coaching for each individual caregiver to reach their tier potential
  • Working and interacting with volunteers and visitors to include, but not limited to: conducting tours, assigning work, answering questions, promoting Best Friends mission and assisting with their general needs
  • Participate and at times run team meeting and/or staff meetings
  • Responsible for assuring that the caregivers in their areas are following training plans and documenting the work they are doing with the dogs in the LCP's
  • Cultivate good team building practices through good communication, sharing information, and working together to achieve goals
  • Lead by example
  • Knowledge of all dog dynamics in their areas
  • Responsible for dog introductions and placement of dogs into new runs
  • Assist with inventory control, maintenance reporting/follow up, etc
  • Other duties as needed

Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of one-year Best Friends work experience or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations via BFAS Human Resources trainings or equivalent
  • The ideal person for this job would be a team player, positive, personable, upbeat and energetic who effectively uses tact and diplomacy in daily interactions
  • Demonstrates ability to create and encourage a positive work environment
  • The successful candidate would take initiative to resolve problems and seek answers independently and enthusiastically persist until goals are achieved
  • Demonstrate personal accountability to ensure that all responsibilities are completed effectively and in a timely manner
  • Ability to make sound judgments and work independently in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Knowledgeable of dogs, care giving, and characteristics of dogs.
  • Advanced knowledge of:
    • The department
    • The organization's goals and strategies
    • Animal welfare
  • Often working outdoors, must be physically able to perform strenuous manual labor
  • Proven communication skills with experience interacting with the general public
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
  • Professionally advocate Best Friends position on issues
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment with staff as well as volunteers
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft product suite including but not limited to Office 365, MS-Excel, MS-Word along with ADP and BFIS
  • Must have a driver's license with access to transportation to drive on behalf of organization business

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift 40 to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to perform strenuous manual labor
  • Must be able to work out of doors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 100 degrees
  • Must be able to work with physically strong dogs
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, hike, walk, kneel and lift

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
