Park Ranger

The incumbent will serve as a Park Ranger in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument Visitor Center located in Kanab, Utah. Major duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Oversees and carries out day to day operations at Visitor Center. Posts daily weather, flash flood, and road conditions for safety of visitors. Assists in closing areas when conditions warrant and assists with emergencies involving visitors. Assists with the operation of interpretive sales; receiving, stocking, inventory, pricing, displays. Operates cash register and maintains accounting records. Provides interpretation to visitors on the natural and human history of the area. Operates and maintains various equipment, providing frequent preventative maintenance. Physical Demands:
Work requires prolonged standing and walking in the work area. Intermittent bending, lifting, and carrying are also required to transport visual aids and other equipment, heavy boxes of books, and other stock. Occasional fieldwork includes walking on groomed trails, climbing over logs, or walking cross country over uneven and steep terrain for periods ranging from 30 minutes to 8 hours. Occasional extended work hours may be required from 9 to 12 hours a day, and may occasionally involve overnight camping. Work Environment:
The work is primarily performed in an office setting with occasional visits to other indoor and outdoor environments. Other Significant Facts:
Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working holidays. Wear of standard Bureau uniform while performing patrol and public contact duties is required. Must be able to possess a valid driver's license and operate government vehicles and equipment. Work will be accomplished using various modes of transportation including two and four wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, mountain bikes, horseback, snow machines, etc. Selective Placement Factor:
These positions require a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor will be rated not qualified:
- Able to obtain and maintain a valid State Driver's License within 30 days of entrance on duty. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume.GS-4 Park Ranger- 6 months of general and 6 months of specialized work experience. Examples of general experience may include working in any administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible field that provided you with a familiarity of natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public. Examples of specialized experience may include working at a visitor center information desk answering visitor questions that are routine and repetitive pertaining to geographical location of campgrounds, picnic areas, boating areas and other recreational areas; serving as a lookout to detect and report fires, status of fires, and suspicious smoke; or answering visitor's questions at an entrance station and explaining regulations covering common park use situations, such as campground reservations and rules, collection of fees and selling of permits. -OR- Successful completion of two years of education above high school with at least 12 semester hours of related course work. -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.GS-5 Park Ranger- one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include explaining regulations to park visitors; providing information and advice on park activities and resources; collecting fees; issuing reservations and permits; conducting guided tour programs; maintaining recreation facilities or trails; or monitoring special recreation permits. -OR- Successful completion of four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours of related course work. -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
